“Kill Othello” by Director BING ZHAO
Shakespeare is great not only because of his use of language and beautiful playwriting, but also because of his deep meditation on human nature and great contribution to humanism. His discoveries and meditations continue to nurture and inspire the great thinkers of modern society. His work pushes the human consciousness forward even today. Othello is his most symbolic play.
The script of Othello does not seem any different from other plays. However, underneath the surface, all the characters of Othello are just different aspects of Othello. It shows the complexity and multi – dimensions of human nature. This makes it possible to reconstruct the play.
I start with Act 3, scene 3, skipping Act 1 and Act 2. Iago straight to the heart of the conflict from Act 3, scene 3 and finish with the killing of Desdemona.
Only four actors are required for the entire production: Othello, Desdemona, Iago, and Cassio. Othello is the general, a symbol of the human desire for power. Desdemona is his wife, a personification of his “Uncertainty”. Iago, Othello’s right hand man, is a symbol of “Suspicion” . Cassio is the jealousy in Othello’s “Weakness” . All these different characters are really just different aspects of Othello.
I want to, as a game, cloth all the characters the same ( maybe except for different hair styles) except for Othello. On their clothes, words such as “Uncertainty”, “Suspicion”, and “Weakness” will be written.
“Uncertainty”, “Suspicion” and “weakness” are ultimately caused by human nature, being the animality.
To present Animality as a common feature between human being and animal, and to argue that Animality does not evolve with civilization development, there will be 10 pieces of animal topic painting hung around the theatre room so that to bring out the dramatic outcome through transformation from painting to human then to painting again.
Out of respect for the play, the production will be done in English. Changes will be made to the narrative style of the play. Playfulness is an essential ingredient – to show the multidimensional nature of human nature and to make the play more watchable.
The entire production will take around an hour. The rehearsal time will be around 100 hours. It will cost around 8000 dollars to make the play.
I have many goals in putting up this production: first of all, Shakespeare is a classic. It will raise the consciousness of the public. Second of all, every reading of Shakespeare is different. I believe my reading will be beneficial because it will make the audience question themselves. Third, the exchange of theatrical culture is beneficial to human evolution. Once the play is done rehearsing, it will be shown openly to the public. Then it will go to the different Shakespeare festivals around the world.
About dance in the <Kill Othello>
There are three important paragraph of dance in< Kill Othello>, they are:
1) At the end of the prelude, when Desdemona, Iago and Cassio separate from Othello’s body and further spread out.
2) The scene when Othello and his wife Desdemona is having affectionate touching.
3) At the end when Othello turns crazy, kills other three, just like kills himself.
Requirements: use the dynamic elements from Tap, African and South American dance for expression. The hypothetical meaning of dance is more imaginary than drama. Therefore, the more illusory the better, dance should be very different from the actual plot so that to be used to consciously break the script narrative. It has to be dynamic and interesting.
Daily physical training plan is necessary for the cast as soon as rehearsal starts.
